The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office say they have received reports of lottery and sweepstakes style scams recently.
Investigators say residents are receiving letters in the mail saying they are the winners of a “communication lottery sweepstakes million dollar drawing”.
The letter is from allied co-operative brokers incorporated, a division of unclaimed funds.
Attached to the letter is a check for you to cash saying “you are someone deserving of special treatment” and all you have to do to activate this check is call their claiming manager.
That’s when they try to pry all sorts of personal information out of you, that they can use to rip you off.
