A Legitimate Company’s Name, A Criminal’s Scheme | Washington | Business Identity Theft Fraud

A Washington state business owner discovered criminals had hijacked the company’s identity to establish fraudulent lines of credit and purchase thousands of dollars in goods from suppliers across the country. Authorities say the fraudsters exploited publicly available business information to impersonate the legitimate company.

According to investigators, the suspects filed falsified business records, created deceptive email domains and opened financial accounts using the company’s name. Vendors believed they were conducting business with a trusted organization and extended credit accordingly.

The fraud came to light when collection notices began arriving at the legitimate company’s offices for purchases executives knew nothing about. An internal review quickly revealed multiple unauthorized accounts and transactions linked to the organization’s identity.

Investigators determined that the perpetrators had gathered information from public filings and corporate websites before creating convincing supporting documentation. Several suppliers reported that communications appeared professional and contained accurate company details, making the deception difficult to detect.

Financial losses exceeded $400,000 before the scheme was identified and reported. Law enforcement officials continue investigating whether additional businesses were targeted using similar tactics.

The case illustrates the growing threat of business identity theft and the increasing sophistication of fraudsters who blend stolen information with fabricated credentials to create highly convincing schemes. Organizations are encouraged to monitor business registrations, credit activity and vendor communications for signs of unauthorized activity.

Today’s Fraud of the Day is based on reporting from Washington state law enforcement and business fraud investigators regarding corporate identity theft cases in 2026.
