While this technology has legitimate applications in entertainment and education, it has increasingly become a tool for malicious activities, particularly in scams and frauds.
How Scammers Exploit Deepfake Technology:
Impersonation for Financial Fraud: Scammers use deepfake audio and video to impersonate trusted individuals, such as company executives or family members, to deceive victims into transferring money or divulging sensitive information. For instance, in 2019, a U.K.-based energy firm’s CEO was tricked into transferring €220,000 to a fraudulent account after receiving a call that used AI to mimic the voice of his parent company’s chief executive.
Fake Endorsements and Investment Schemes: Deepfakes featuring celebrities or public figures are created to promote fraudulent investment opportunities or products. These convincing endorsements can mislead individuals into investing in scams or purchasing non-existent products. Notably, deepfake videos of Elon Musk have been used to promote fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes.
