Fraud and money laundering prevention provider Hawk has successfully raised $56 million in a Series C funding round, announced Tuesday. The Germany-based company aims to utilize this investment to enhance product innovation and expand its presence, particularly in the United States.
Hawk emphasizes that its approach transcends traditional, rules-based systems that often burden compliance teams with vast numbers of false positive alerts, leading to staffing challenges and increased costs. The company asserts that its artificial intelligence-powered tools significantly improve accuracy in detecting financial crimes while minimizing false alerts.
CEO Tobias Schweiger highlighted the compelling results of Hawk’s technology, noting that accuracy in identifying genuine alerts has reached nearly 90% in some cases, enabling the detection of twice as many previously unrecognized criminal activities. This funding comes at a crucial time when banks are demanding stronger anti-money laundering and fraud protections. At a recent Congressional hearing, industry representatives called for a coordinated government response to combat rising payment and investment scams, with 1 in 3 American adults reportedly experiencing financial fraud in the past year.
Darrin McLaughlin, chief AML and sanctions officer for Flagstar Bank, emphasized the need for a strategic approach to tackle these threats effectively. Concurrently, research from PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that 71% of financial institutions are now employing AI and machine learning technologies for fraud detection, reflecting a growing trend in the industry towards leveraging advanced analytics for enhanced security.
