Special thanks to Hennepin County Police for participating and posting this video.
NOTE: The term “shimmer” is mentioned several times which is actually incorrect. The officer is detecting card “skimmers” not “shimmers”. Shimmers use a different technology to steal the EMV data for the chip in cards, not the magnetic stripe.
If you’re heading to a gas station, you need to watch this!
Thieves have a new scam to steal your credit card information, and it’s called a credit card shimmer.
Recently, our Special Assignments Unit checked gas stations across northern Hennepin County for the small electrical device hidden in the credit card insert that can steal information including a PIN number.
Our deputies show us a new device they have to detect a shimmer called a Skim Scan, and what you can do to protect your credit card.
