Scam Alert: Beware of Fake Tech Support Pop-ups

Be on the lookout for fake pop-up messages on your computer or phone. These messages often claim to be from trusted companies like Microsoft, Apple, or Amazon and warn that your account is involved in serious crimes such as drug trafficking or fraud. The goal is to scare you into acting fast.

Once they have your attention, scammers pretend to be from tech support, your bank, or even law enforcement. They’ll tell you to transfer your money to “protect” or “secure” it, or they might ask you to buy cryptocurrency, gold, or gift cards. Some even ask you to download software that gives them control of your device.

Remember:
Real companies or government agencies will never ask you to move your money, buy gift cards, or download software to fix a problem. They also won’t ask you to lie to your bank or loved ones.

What to Do:

  • Do not click on any links or call numbers in the pop-up.

  • Turn off your device and disconnect from the internet.

  • Talk to someone you trust or contact your bank before taking any action.

  • Report the scam to help protect others. Visit IowaFraudFighters.gov for a list of local and statewide agencies dedicated to taking your call.

Stay alert! Knowing the signs is the best way to stop scammers in their tracks.
