The Forgotten | Tennessee | Paycheck Protection Program Fraud

“What About Us,” is an anthem that questions the treatment of those who feel unheard and forgotten, using “us” to represent this collective group. The lyrics explore a sense of abandonment and the feeling of being overlooked that can resonate for all. Nakita Cannady owned and operated a home health services business called What About Us, a business that supposedly provided custodial healthcare services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to mostly elderly patients. Yet, while billing health insurance companies for supposed 24-hour a day home healthcare, she really was only delivering 8 to 12 hours of service – which makes us question whether Cannady was wondering about anyone but herself. Especially as she goes on to use “What About Us” in many more ways

From June 17, 2020, through April 15, 2021, Cannady submitted six fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) purported businesses she controlled: What About Us Childcare, What About Us Foundation, What About Us Adult Daycare, and What About Us In-Home Healthcare. Cannady’s loan applications contained false information concerning the dates of operation, gross revenues, costs of goods sold, number of employees, and amount of payroll related to the businesses. Yet, she was able to fraudulently obtain $346,882.13 in PPP loans. The U.S. taxpayer was the one group Cannady didn’t ask about.

On April 4, 2025, Cannady was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison. She was also directed to pay more than $500,000 dollars in restitution to the victims.

Shout out to the FBI in this case.

Today’s Fraud of The Day is based on article “Memphis woman sentenced in healthcare fraud scheme” published by Local Memphis News on April 23, 2025.

A woman has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison after being found guilty by a grand jury for healthcare fraud, as announced by Joseph C. Murphy, Jr., Interim United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee in a press statement.

Nakita Cannady, 49, was the owner of What About Us In-Home Healthcare, a home healthcare clinic that provided 24-hour care for predominantly elderly patients, according to the original federal indictment. The indictment goes on to state that Cannady fraudulently billed Cigna Insurance for 24 hours of home healthcare per day, even though the patients only received 8 to 12 hours of home healthcare per day.
