I previously provided information on the Villa Vie Odyssey, a residential cruise ship founded and managed by Mikael (Mike) Petterson and Kathryn (Kathy) Villalba.  Mike and Kathy established multiple companies related to residential cruising, using names that include Villa Vie Residences, VVR Hospitality, Avora Residences, and Lumina. (Multiple names and entities are used, possibly to keep things confusing, avoid legal liability, and provide cover for new business ventures.)

Villa Vie Odyssey was in financial trouble from the very beginning, likely due to inexperience, ineptitude, and mismanagement by Mike and Kathy. Although the ship sailed for two years, the financial troubles intensified in April 2026 when the couple asked passengers to loan the company money.

Just this week, approximately 200 residents still on the ship (some passengers had already left in the previous couple of months because the writing was on the wall) were ordered off the ship. The Odyssey is done sailing and is in “warm layup” with a skeleton crew, but it is unclear how long the cost of this can be maintained.

The financial shenanigans up to this point are fascinating, and Sail Away Magazine has covered this very well in the below video. Scroll down for a better look at some of the documents shown in the video. For more background about how badly Villalba and Petterson ran this business into the ground, read this article by Sail Away Magazine.
